Role Summary
We’re looking for a Level Designer (Unity) to craft and shape engaging, immersive levels that enhance gameplay and storytelling. You will be responsible for planning, mapping, and designing levels with compelling layouts, environmental storytelling, and intuitive player flow. Your work will define the pacing, complexity, and engagement of each level, ensuring players experience a world that feels both dynamic and alive.
Responsibilities
- Design and build levels using Unity, focusing on flow, pacing, and player experience.
- Plan and map level layouts, integrating environmental storytelling and gameplay objectives.
- Balance difficulty and progression, ensuring levels provide a satisfying challenge.
- Collaborate with game designers, artists, and developers to refine and iterate on level designs.
- Optimize levels for performance while maintaining visual quality and interactivity.
- Test and iterate on level designs based on player feedback and internal playtesting.
- Implement interactive elements, navigation paths, and player guidance mechanics.
- Ensure consistency in theme, tone, and experience across different levels.
Qualifications & Experience
- 3+ years of experience designing levels for games, preferably in Unity.
- Proficiency with Unity’s level design tools (ProBuilder, Terrain, Tilemaps, etc.).
- Strong understanding of game flow, pacing, and player engagement.
- Experience with blocking out and whiteboxing levels before final asset integration.
- Knowledge of level optimization techniques for performance and memory efficiency.
- Strong sense of spatial design, layout, and environmental storytelling.
- Experience working with game mechanics, physics, and navigation systems is a plus.

Work Environment
We are a fully remote studio seeking talent across the United States. Our core work hours align with 9 AM – 5 PM local time, Monday through Friday.
Compensation
Muddy Robot Games offers equity-based compensation. As a contractor, you will receive equity shares in the company in place of a traditional salary. Your ownership stake reflects the value of your contributions, positioning you as a stakeholder in our journey. The value of your equity may fluctuate based on market conditions and company growth.
